Putting the nail in the coffin...

"Hey R* I still need to know, will we be able to swim in RDR?" - captaincabbage

As an outlaw character who's spent most of his life on horseback in the land-locked territories of the West - John Marston is not much of a swimmer. If he has to cross a body of water, transport will be provided. John has no problem wading, but if he gets too deep, he will drown.

    2 things:

    1. The best westerns have swimming! (not)

    2. Swimming is boring in games 9/10 times. When it isn't boring is when it's a good underwater game...of which there are about...how many? Bioshock 2 has some nice...fake swimming.

Anyway Good to know. Swimming doesn't seem to be needed in the story or game world they've created.

yea in a game world with only like 5% water swimming really wont be needed. its just nice to have when runnin from the law(the old river escape)is classic

i am not totally bummed about this info b/c it seems more realistic i mean in how many westerns do you see the guy trying to swim across a flowing river or someone swimming in a lake cuz ppl back then prolly didn't know how to swim. would've been cool though

They didn't exactly have swimming lesson when your a kid back then and especially living in the desert. I think they have made the right decision there!

Yea. I guess it would have been cool but I agree with creeps.
swimming in games is always boring.
But i just hope it doesn't limit you to one section in free roam, and your only allowed to cross rivers in missions.

It kind of bothers me just a tad bit that they would say this, considering outlaws are constantly on the run meaning they would have to take some time off here and there to bathe in rivers/lakes. But if that's how it is then so be it.

Swimming was extremely annoying in GTA4 anyway. But I'd rather not get in a 20 minute long horseback chase with the law to finally jump off a cliff into a body of water only to die.

i think its stupid as hell they aren't letting you swim.

I mean that massive lake int he screen shot, the huge rivers? Comeon there is going to lots of opportunitys to try and drown your horse only to kill yourself...

I am bummed this is not in the game. Especially as its such a basic game concept..

Hardly anyone in any western, or back then IRL knew how to swim. It's obvious that they put a lot of thought into it, or they would have just made you touch water and die. You can wade through it, it just if you go too far out he'll begin to have trouble staying afloat, and if you don't move back, you drown.

This is a cinematic Spaghetti Western action game. You can do pretty much whatever you want unless it is out of place. I'm glad they didn't unrealistically implement swimming just so you can "drown your horse" and not die with it.

I would love to see people play the game for 30 hours with swimming as feature, and then 30 without. I guarantee the last thing they would have done was go swimming. One reason being there are hardly any bodies of water in the game world.

Kinda sucks that there isnt any swimming since swimming was implemented in older GTA games and feels like a step bacl, but it is all for realism and the game itself. Not to mention there arent gonna be anywhere to swim anyways, and not like there are any boats to use (not including paddle boats, those things are stupid and slow)

I know you guys think that you might fall off a cliff into the water, but I remember reading somewhere (please don't rip my nuts off for not having a link) that horses iare intelligent enough to have their own brain and stop before he falls off a cliff so I don't see any problems accidentally drowning.

I really wish this isnt true. So my horse is going to stop me from leaping off a cliff? So much for freedom lol.

Remember back in gta3.. no boats and yet remember how annoying it was when your blasting along in a car and suddenly before you no it you lost control and landed in water and drowned? Very.

I know that i might be perched on top of a cliff sniping people.. slip.. then drown.. then be teleported half way across the map to the closest hospital? i know tht would be annoying.

It might not be something we use often but i bet when you need it you will be annoyed that you cant.

It's been said that horses will behave depending on how you treat them, and if they're loyal to you, they'll will be more than willing to place themselves in danger, so the whole cliff thing may also work this way.

As for the swimming, you can tread on shallow water, and I really don't mind that Marston will drown in deep waters, since they're likely there for boundaries.

I've also heard this to. I don't remember which one. But a previewer had his horse jump off a cliff whilst still on it to see what happens when you die.

Honestly, It's a touch disappointing that you can't swim. Not a deal-breaker, of course, but it seems a little bit like a step backward with regards to immersion (pun intended). Obviously, it won't affect the gameplay significantly but... I... I wanted to go skinny dipping. Ah, well.
