Brokeback Mountain isn't a western, agreed, but you're a fucking prick. Disregard what I posted elsewhere about your great avatar.Diablo Dak wrote:Brokeback mountain isn't a western, just a story about two fags with cowboy hats.

Fistful of Dynamite (also known as "Duck, You Sucker" is a really great Leone. I didn't know the time was the same, interesting. I also find your views on "casino" interesting and would like to subscribe to your newsletter.WingZings wrote:Screaming Meat wrote:I'm a big fan of all Sergio Leone's Westerns, particularly 'For A Few Dollars More' ("No, old man. Thought I was having trouble with my adding. It's all right now.") and 'Once Upon A Time In The West' ("You brought two too many.").
"The Shootist", "The Searchers" and "True Grit" are pretty fantastic examples of John Wayne's performances.
'Unforgiven' is a brilliantly subtle deconstruction of the Western and easily one of Clint's greatest performances.
If you consider Westerns to not be ultimately defined by the period, then I'd also rate "No Country For Old Men", "Way of the Gun" and (arguably) "Casino" - they're easily up there with the best of them.
It's pushing it but you can argue that the Western genre isn't exclusively defined by period OR location, so I'd suggest Akira Kurosawa made some pretty good examples in "Yojimbo", "Sanjuro" and, of course, "Seven Samurai". Liek I say, it's pushing it.
Jesus, I'm ranting. There's far too many great Westerns to list.
Dude don't forget "Duck, You Sucker" on the list of Leone westerns. It's set in the same time as RDR.

Re: What is your favorite western?
All good movies, WingZings. Can't forget Hang 'em High. The Magnificent Seven is a true western remake of Seven Samurai, although the origional was quite epic for the period it came out. I love everything by Akira Kurosawa, Sergio Leone, and Clint Eastwood.
Another ineteresting topic would be Western themed literature. Anybody ever read Steven King's 7 book Opus, The Dark Tower? Probably the most epic western themed story that ever was. My avatar is artwork from the Comic series that King collaberated on with Marvel.
Also The Proposition is a badass Australian western that came out in 2005... Similar story to John Marston's except the main character must hunt his older outlaw brother to save his younger brother's life.

Re: What is your favorite western?
@WingZings - 'Fistful of Dynamite' (AKA 'Duck, You Sucker!' AKA 'Once Upon A Time... The Revolution' AKA 'Blah Blah Blah') is a firm favourite. Steiger and Coburn's relationship is for me the most heart-warming partnership in a Leone Western. Good call, chief.
@NiceMarmot - Nah-nah nah-nah nah-nah LEAD-EEER! Scorcese said it, not me. You can see it though: The Gambler, The Hired Gun and The Whore in a desert town... there's even a showdown, if I remember rightly. My newsletter has headlines like: 'The Goonies - Five kids looking for One-Eyed Willy?'
@Hellafied - That's a fine list, too. I adore 'The Proposition' and I can't believe I didn't list it myself! I particularly like how they handled the violence, it really smacks you in the face unexpectedly... and what a soundtrack!
I'm not really a Stephen King fan anymore but I did read four or five 'Dark Tower' novels. 'Wizard & Glass' and the first novel were easily my favourites. Evocative opening line, too:
"The Man in Black fled across the Desert, and the Gunslinger followed."
Whoops - forgot to say (like I haven't said enough): I haven't read much Western Literature although I just started Cormac McCarthy's 'Blood Meridian' on a friend's recommendation. It's brutal so far.

Re: What is your favorite western?
Unforgiven for me. (It's the movie that made me want to write movies)
Followed closely by The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.
The Magnificent Seven.
The Proposition.
Tombstone.
The Wild Bunch.
The Naked Spur.
I'm writing a couple westerns right now: A neo-western about revenge. A story about a theif called the Brigand. And a haunted western that puts necromancy into the genre.

Re: What is your favorite western?
Well, they are in screenplay format so posting it here would be hard, not to mention bad if I want to sell them.
I will post any art or story synopsis I have for them though. Maybe I will write novel versions or short story versions and post them here over time.
We should have a story/ fan fic section on this site!

I have a few favorite westerns but i know some of them have been mentioned already so i would say "The assassination of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford" starring Brad Pitt and my favorite comedy western is "Little Big Man" starring Dustin Hoffman i think its one of the greatest like "blazing saddles".

Just saw The Wild Bunch for the first time today.. It's awesome, good western.
Also, it takes place around the same time as RDR, that's cool.. can't wait to get that game now!!

Re: What is your favorite western?
My favorite is The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. The acting is outstanding and the score is so well done in setting the dread of the situation into you. Intresting fact, Nick Cave does the scoring on Jesse James and he also wrote The Propostion. That movie is awesome too.
